Travel guide Rotterdam

Welcome to Rotterdam, the city that never sleeps! The rebellious daughter of the Netherlands, Rotterdam is where architectural innovation and cultural daring meet to create an unforgettable tourist experience. With its dynamic mix of picturesque cobbled streets and futuristic skyscrapers, Rotterdam is a must-see destination for architecture lovers, foodies and urban adventurers.
Over the centuries, Rotterdam has evolved from a simple fishing village to one of the largest and most flourishing ports in the world. After being almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, Rotterdam was transformed into a veritable laboratory of urban architecture. This turbulent history has shaped the resilient and progressive spirit of the city we know today.
Rotterdam is easily accessible by various means of transport. Rotterdam-The Hague airport is well served by many airlines. Alternatively, Amsterdam Schiphol airport is only an hour away by train. If you prefer to travel by rail, there are direct trains to Rotterdam from many major European cities. Finally, for road lovers, the Dutch motorway network is excellent and Rotterdam is well signposted.

Accommodation

For a luxurious stay, opt for the Mainport Design Hotel, offering panoramic views of the Maas river. For a more affordable choice, CitizenM offers designer rooms at a reasonable price. And if you're travelling on a tight budget, the King Kong Hostel is a trendy, budget option located in the heart of the lively Witte de Withstraat district.

Gastronomy

Rotterdam's cuisine is a blend of international and local flavours. Try 'bitterballen', a traditional Dutch snack, or 'haring', fresh herring served with onions and gherkins. For an upmarket dining experience, book a table at the Michelin-starred FG restaurant.
