Travel guide Bergen

Welcome to Bergen, the gateway to Western Norway and a glittering treasure trove of history, culture and natural beauty. Nestled between seven mountains, Bergen is often nicknamed 'the mountain city' or 'the rainy city' for its climate. But don't let that put you off, as Bergen has much to offer, from its colourful wooden houses to its bustling fish markets and picturesque hiking trails.
Founded by King Olav Kyrre in 1070, Bergen has a rich Viking and Hanseatic past. It was Norway's largest city until 1830 and a major centre of maritime trade in Northern Europe. The Bryggen district, with its wooden houses, is a living testimony to its rich Hanseatic past and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The most convenient way to get to Bergen is by air, with Bergen Flesland airport served by many international airlines. Bergen is also accessible by train, with daily services from Oslo. More adventurous travellers can opt for a cruise along the Norwegian coast or a drive along the famous Atlantic Highway.

Accommodation

For a luxurious stay, book a room at the Hotel Opus XVI or the Bergen Børs Hotel. For a mid-range budget, the Magic Hotel Kløverhuset or the Thon Hotel Orion are good choices. If you're looking for something more economical, HI Bergen Hostel Montana is an affordable option.

Gastronomy

Trying the local cuisine is a must in Bergen. Try Fiskesuppe (fish soup), Raspeballer (potato dumplings) or Klippfisk (salted cod). For an upmarket dining experience, book a table at the Bare Vestland restaurant. For something more casual, try Pingvinen or Fjellskål Fisketorget.
